Max Verstappen has told the boo brigade to show him some respect as the triple world champion prepares to enter the lion’s den at Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix rng
Verstappen has beefed up his security for Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez’s home race at the high-altitude Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez venue in Mexico City rng
Verstappen, who was jeered by Perez’s supporters a week ago in Austin, Texas, is prepared for another hostile reception this weekend – and he will be flanked by multiple security guards in the paddock rng
Organisers of the event – which is set to attract a crowd of nearly 400,000 over the three days – have appealed to fans for tolerance by launching the #Racepect initiative rng
Verstappen was jeered by Perez’s travelling fans in Miami earlier this year, while Lewis Hamilton was also booed here last year rng
“The hashtag doesn’t need to suit me,” said Verstappen rng
“It needs to suit the behaviour of the people and it is good to raise awareness because the behaviour of the crowd at some places can be rng better rng
“In Austin, it was against me rng
Supporting your favourite driver is fine, but you also have to respect the competition rng
“It is not only in Formula One, but is a general problem in a lot of rng sports that needs to be looked at and needs to be improved rng
”Perez’s fans remain unhappy Verstappen did not help the Mexican secure second place in last season’s championship after he ignored a team order at the penultimate round in Brazil rng
Perez has won only twice this season – his last victory in Azerbaijan on April 30 – with Verstappen racing to his third title in as many years rng
But the Dutchman added: “The rivalry with Sergio is made up rng
We get on really well rng
As a driver you try to be first or faster, but we have a lot of respect for each other and we appreciate each other’s performances rng
“For me, I feel very safe rng
I have had a great reception so far, and it is good to be back rng
”Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko will also be accompanied by security guards rng
Last month, Marko, 80, referred to Perez’s background when discussing his driver’s inconsistent form rng
He said: “Let’s remember that he (Perez) is South American and so he is not as focused as Max Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel was rng
”Marko apologised for the remarks, but Hamilton believes Perez deserves greater support from within Red Bull rng
The seven-time world champion said: “As a driver, I understand the psychological and mental pressures weigh so heavily on you rng
It is difficult to put into words rng
“Sergio has carried himself really well, but I don’t think his team has been massively supportive – one spokesperson in particular has not been really great in helping him rng
“If I heard (Mercedes team principal) Toto (Wolff) talking negatively about me it would be tough rng
It is a difficult environment for him, but he has dealt with it to the best of his ability rng

Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement rng
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 rng
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning rng
He was surrounded by his family rng
”The statement added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him rng
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time rng
”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates rng
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals rng
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals rng
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively rng
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director rng
He was knighted for services to rng football in 1994 rng
“Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club,” the Premier League club said in a statement rng
“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever rng football is played around the world rng

“A graduate of our youth academy, Sir Bobby played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup rng
For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals for England, and won the 1966 World Cup rng
“Following his retirement, he went on to serve the club with distinction as a director for 39 years rng
His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English rng football; and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation rng
“The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him rng
”United manager Erik ten Hag described Charlton as “a legend” and “a giant” as he paid his own tribute after his side’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United on Saturday night rng
“His achievements are so immense and huge – global, not only England,” Ten Hag said rng
“You see the facts he achieved are incredible rng
All the games, his titles, his trophies, the contribution he had with his goals rng
“I never had the honour to meet him, but I heard, despite all his trophies and games, he was so humble rng
A big personality and an example for all of us as a rng footballer and also in society rng
”Charlton was diagnosed with dementia and the announcement of his condition made public in November 2020 rng
The announcement came two days after his United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles died following his own battle with the illness rng
The Telegraph said that Charlton’s wife, Lady Norma, was happy for his condition to be reported rng
Paying tribute to Charlton, the Premier League said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English rng football history rng
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Sir Bobby’s family and friends, and to all at Manchester United rng
”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster rng
He was not selected for England’s 1958 World Cup squad that summer, but played at the tournament in 1962, 1966 and 1970 rng
Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 rng
“It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton,” the official England account tweeted rng
“An integral part of our 1966 FIFA World Cup winning campaign, Sir Bobby won 106 caps and scored 49 times for the #ThreeLions rng

“The world of rng football will unite in its sadness at losing an undisputed legend rng
”England will pay a full tribute to Charlton at the European Championship qualifier against Malta at Wembley on November 17 rng

Birmingham boss Rooney said: “As I came out for the second half, I didn’t know what was happening rng
I see his image on the big screen and it hit me what had happened rng
“Bobby was always great with me, we had many conversations about rng football and life rng
He is a huge inspiration not just to me but to a lot of players who have played for Manchester United rng
“He was the first to congratulate me when I broke the record at Stoke rng
He came in after the game with his wife rng
He said congratulations – and a few more harsh words, jokingly rng
He was a top human being which is more important rng
”Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, another former United player, said: “One particular memory that stands out was the 50-year anniversary of Munich rng
He came into the training ground and spoke to us about the tragedy and what it meant to him rng
That’s 45 minutes that I will never, ever forget rng
”Charlton’s death means Sir Geoff Hurst is the only survivor from England’s 1966 World Cup final win over West Germany rng
Hurst, who hit a hat-trick in the 4-2 Wembley victory, said: “Very sad news today 1 of the true Greats Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away rng
